The Felicity Ace car carrier has sunk in the Atlantic Ocean.
The ship’s manager, MOL Ship Management (Singapore), confirmed that the vessel sank around 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday approximately 220 nautical miles off the Azores Islands, citing initial reports from the on-site salvage team.
Salvage vessels will remain in the area to monitor the situation.
The sinking of the Felicity Ace comes nearly two weeks after a fire broke out in the ship’s cargo area.
Skytek previously reported that the total loss could exceed $500M.
The Felicity Ace departed Emspier jetty in Emden, Germany on 09th February 2022 at 1910 UTC after reportedly loading a batch of luxury cars, with a destination of Davisville port, Rhode Island on the East Coast of USA.
On the morning of Wednesday, the 16th, a fire emerged in one of the cargo holds and spread further while the vessel was sailing at about 160Nm west of Ponta Delgada, Portugal.
The fire forced the crew to abandon the vessel. They were picked up by the nearby tanker “Resilient Warrior” – IMO9856359 and subsequently airlifted by helicopter Air Force EH-101 Merlin said Forca Aerea Portuguese in a statement.
The abandoned vessel is drifting easterly. The Owners are arranging for a salvage tug, while it is unclear which nearby port could accommodate the 200m long vessel.
The estimated market value of the Felicity Ace is $24,5M. The 3,965 cars onboard are confirmed to be 189 Bentleys, along with brands like Porsche, Audi, and Lamborghini, with a starting value from $99,650 that could exceed a total of $500M.
